Cholesterol medications & drugs are pretty good at lowering cholesterol levels. However, their side effects are something that can seriously affect your health. Seriously means, that in extreme cases they can even result in death. And this is nothing new. Any prescription drug is in effect a poison.
In this article you will find out more about how any drugs negatively affect our health, and especially cholesterol drugs. You will learn whether cholesterol drugs are worth the risks, plus alternatives to lower cholesterol naturally.
Finally, how I lowered my cholesterol naturally without cholesterol drugs.
Drugs Effect on Patients
FACT: Over 2 million people are seriously injured, and 106,000 die every year, from the correct use of prescription drugs.
And what action is taken as a result of this. Let’s see. In 1992 there were 2.03 billion prescriptions dispensed. In 1998 it rose to 2.78 billion. And in 2005 it was 4 billion. By 2020 there will probably be 10 billions prescriptions or more.
There are already more than 100,000 people dying every year. And the action taken is to increase the number of drugs available. It sounds like insanity. It’s just like if someone were drowning in a pool, you add water to the pool, in order to save the person.
2 Approaches to Cholesterol Medications
Cholesterol lowering drugs are typically based on two main approaches.
First, there are cholesterol lowering drugs such as Questran and Welchol that block absorption of cholesterol in the gastrointestinal tract.
These cholesterol binders absorb cholesterol whether eaten or secreted into the intestinal tract through the bile and carry it until excreted with the stool. The cholesterol is thus eliminated from the enterohepatic circulation and cannot get into the bloodstream.
The second approach is based on cholesterol medications that block cholesterol synthesis in the liver, with drugs such as Lipitor, Zocor, Pravachol, and Lescol. This also reduces the total body pool of cholesterol.
Using one or both of these methods may reduce the blood cholesterol levels and the risk for cardiovascular disease, but the question we need to ask is: At what cost?
Are Cholesterol Drugs Worth the Risks?
Cholesterol lowering drugs have severe side effects, for example drug-induced hepatitis. This can often result in myalgia and myositis (an inflammation of the muscles).
Although the pharmaceutical machinery has done its best to come out with new cholesterol lowering drugs with less severe side effects, they still remain serious problems to be resolved.
Additionally, patients taking cholesterol medications and statin drugs require regular monitoring of their liver enzymes and frequent doctor visits to check for damage to the liver. Cholesterol drugs have many side effects starting with muscle pain & degeneration, memory loss, weight gain, impotence, hair loss.
Because of these side effects and adverse reactions, the FDA recommends prescribing cholesterol medications and statins only when cholesterol levels are markedly elevated or in those who have significant other risks of developing or already have coronary heart disease.
